Hello World!
Okay, so what the actual hell is going on?!?!?!?
I am flabbergasted actually no, I am not surprised at all. This country has time and time again had the opportunity to show people of color that it cares. That they see us as people and that our lives matter. But guess what? They don't. When I found out the ruling in relation to the death of an INNOCENT young woman I cried. These were tears of anger, frustration, disappointment, fear, hurt, confusion, and exhaustion. Malcome X said:
Is protection too much to ask for? By asking for basic human rights, are we asking for too much? People are willing to be up in arms about animal abuse but God forbid an INNOCENT person is killed we're quiet. I don't have words. Actually yes, yes I do. I was and am scared for the men in my life to go out into the world and just exist as a black man in America. This sounds so ignorant but I wasn't as afraid of being a black woman. After Sandra Bland was killed the fear began to rise in me when it came to being pulled over. But now I am afraid to sleep at night? I double-check the locks on my front door, I jump at shadows and creaks. I am too afraid to walk my dog too early in the morning because I don't want to be seen as a threat. Especially in a hoodie at the crack of dawn before the sun is fully out. Even though I am walking my dog that doesn't matter. I look behind me with every step I take to make sure no one is following me, I can't let my guard down because you "never know". My neighbors on my half of the street know me that doesn't mean the other half of the street does. My mother doesn't know this (well now she does), I carry. knife with me when I walk my dog in the morning. I can't trust anyone. I had a scare this morning walking my dog. I forgot to look behind me and suddenly I hear rapid footsteps. I froze, I held on tightly to my knife and turned around. It was a jogger with a reflective vest on but in my mind, that was someone running up behind me wanting to hurt me.
I shouldn't have to feel this way. I have lived in this neighborhood for Fourteen freaking years, but that doesn't make a difference. Year eight I was stopped outside my house by a cop who thought I didn't live at my own house. Crazy, huh? I am already afraid of my success and my future, do I have to be afraid of my life too? It makes me hesitant to even think about bringing black children into this world because I would fear for their lives, all the time. I don't want to have to the conversation if a cop stops you, or when a cop wants to question you, or when a cop wants to bring you down to the station, or when a cop pulls you over. I shouldn't have to have that conversation! Yet here we are. I am tired. And I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. I am starting to lose hope and faith in humanity. I pray that God allows something positive to happen in my week. Something to reinstill hope. Breonna, I am so sorry that the government has let you and your family down. I will always say your name. When I see you I see a reflection of myself.
